The Wild Blueberry Heritage Center is dedicated to preserving and promoting Maine’s wild blueberry ecosystem and local heritage. We are seeking a director to lead this critical mission. Reporting to the board of directors, the director will oversee strategic planning, developing and implementing programs, and effectively engaging stakeholders.
We seek a leader who is passionate about regenerative food systems, local culture and conservation advocacy, has experience in fundraising, and leading staff and volunteers. Established relationships with agricultural organizations, conservation groups, and tribal communities are advantageous. Above all, the director must demonstrate clear vision, strong leadership, clear communication skills, and decisiveness in driving our mission forward. The Wild Blueberry Heritage Center is located in Columbia Falls, Maine.
Mission
The mission is to provide a deeper understanding of the history, science, and culture of Maine’s 10,000-year-old wild blueberry ecosystem. The Wild Blueberry Heritage Center strives to promote the strength of the local community, food system, and natural environment. Our vision is a thriving future for both the biodiverse ecosystem and rural communities of Maine’s wild blueberry lands.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Mission Delivery
- Expand and improve the exhibits located in the iconic Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome as a destination in Columbia Falls, Washington County
- Establish the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center as the “Gateway to Wild Blueberry Lands” promoting local economic growth and tourism
- Create the Wild Blueberry Commons as a sharing of local stores linking people with the land
- Expand partnerships with schools, community groups, and farms.
- Strategic planning, program oversight/development, marketing, and administration.
- Provide oversight and guidance to existing staff.
Resource Development and Fundraising
- Coordinate organizational marketing and public relations.
- Work integrally with the Development Committee and Board members to exceed annual fundraising goals.
- Create new and grow existing funding relationships through corporate and personal solicitations, contracts, and grant writing.
- Develop and manage the Organization’s budget in accordance with the priorities set by the Board.
Preferred qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Commitment to the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center’s mission and values.
- Passion for environmental conservation and community development.
- Experience in nonprofit management, program development, grant writing, or related fields.
- Experience supervising staff and volunteers
- Experience with community building
- Understanding of conservation, regenerative agriculture, and economic development.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment with multiple priorities.
Compensation
$40,000 - $50,000
While the WBHC operates year round, the dome and museum is seasonal. The position can be for either 12 months or 10 months. A full commitment is required during the months the museum is open and the shoulder months.
Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include Social Security, Workman’s Compensation, and a co-pay for medical Insurance.
