President Obama Designates National Monument in Maine

Thursday, September 1, 2016

On August 24th, the White House announced the establishment of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument east of Baxter State Park in north-central Maine, the result of a tremendous philanthropic gift.

The land was donated by the Elliotsville Plantation, Inc., the foundation established by philanthropist Roxanne Quimby and her family. In addition to the land, the gift includes a $40 million endowment (supplementing federal funds) to support the development and maintenance of the park. An initial gift of $20 million will support the initial park development, infrastructure, and operational needs with a pledge of another $20 million in future support.
