MaineCF’s Welch Charitable Fund awards $283K to Greater Portland initiatives

The Maine Community Foundation’s Welch Charitable Fund has awarded more than $283,000 to 16 organizations that serve Greater Portland.

The fund supports organizations that assist people in need with preference to nonprofits focused on youth, education, health care, substance abuse recovery and/or arts and culture.

The 2021 grantees include:

  • Maine Recovery Fund, to expand program capacity in response to the increased demand of services due to COVID-19: $10,000
  • Peaks Island Children's Workshop, to install and replace window shades in classrooms and offices to create a safe and comfortable learning environment for students: $5,612
  • The Yellow Tulip Project, to expand its capacity in Cumberland County and provide COVID-19 relief efforts tied to mental health and addiction through youth empowerment and education: $10,000.

The Welch Charitable Fund was established as a private family foundation in 1983 and is advised by friends of the Welches. The foundation was transferred to the Maine Community Foundation in 2010. The fund’s next application cycle opens May 1, 2022. For more information, visit www.mainecf.org.
