Invitation to Virtual Conversation about Climate Change and Equity

Wednesday, October 13, 2021

On behalf of Ambassador Maulian Dana of the Penobscot Nation, and Gabriela Alcalde, Executive Director of the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, co-chairs of the Maine Climate Council Equity Subcommittee, we invite you to join us for a virtual conversation about climate change and equity in Maine on October 21st, 3-5pm. Register here – and please share this invite with your networks!

Historical and systemic discrimination, underrepresentation, and isolation have left some residents of Maine more vulnerable to the effects of climate change than others. Low income populations, people of color and indigenous communities, rural and geographically isolated communities, and other vulnerable Mainers face the “first and worst” impacts from climate change and may be least able to adapt.

Over the past 8 months, the Equity Subcommittee has met to discuss Maine Won’t Wait, the state’s four-year climate action plan, and has developed draft recommendations for ensuring that all Mainers can benefit from climate change.

Join us on Thursday October 21st, from 3-5pm, to share your feedback on the draft recommendations. We invite you to review the attached discussion guide in advance of the meeting, which includes a plain language version of the recommendations linked above.

Together, we will review the recommendations, and help answer the following questions:

  • Are the recommendations clear?
  • Are there recommendations missing? Do you have ideas on how climate change action can make a difference in serving the needs of the state’s most vulnerable populations?
  • Do you imagine that this set of recommendations will help you, your community, and other communities?

You are also welcome to provide comments directly on the draft recommendations, either during this meeting or anytime through this form. Your feedback (through any venue) will be incorporated into the final recommendations, which will be shared with the Maine Climate Council in early 2022.

Please reach out to Jessica Scott at Jessica.P.Scott@maine.gov with any questions, and we hope you can join on October 21.
