Haney Fund renamed to honor Debbie Leighton

Monday, August 1, 2022

The Board of Directors of the Eleanor Humes Haney Fund is pleased to announce that the Fund has been renamed as the Haney-Leighton Fund in order to honor Deborah Boies Leighton for her tireless work on behalf of the Fund and for her lifelong commitment to radical social change.  Debbie, Elly’s life partner, died August 14, 2021 at the age of 97.

Founded in 2000 by a bequest from Elly’s estate, the Fund supports faith-based and other forms of social action to increase social, economic, cultural, and ecological justice.  Over the years it has awarded more than $560,000 to 190 Maine-based grantees engaged in ongoing education and advocacy for systemic change to overcome racism, transform mass incarceration and the criminal justice system, and advance LGBTQ rights, anti-poverty initiatives and economic justice, ecological and climate justice, women's empowerment, and the arts and cultural change.

Further information about the Fund’s grant program and grantees is available at www.HaneyFund.org.  To make a donation, send a check, payable to The Haney-Leighton Fund, c/o Gilda Nardone, Treasurer, 136 Durham Road, Brunswick, ME 04011.
