Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking a Philanthropy Officer to join our advancement office. In support of philanthropic giving, the Philanthropy Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a portfolio of current and potential donors capable of making gifts of $5,000 and above or planned gifts supporting Bigelow Laboratory. This position will help to develop strategies and carry out plans aimed at maximizing unrestricted support for the Laboratory by working with the Vice President for Advancement, our scientists, and select board volunteers. Through personal contact and correspondence and in-person meetings, the Philanthropy Officer will maintain excellent donor relations with an active pipeline of donors and prospects.

Requirements

We are looking for an outgoing fundraiser with an interest in the environment as pertains to climate change, preferably with experience in science or ocean-related philanthropy. The successful candidate will be excited to cultivate prospects new to our work or existing donors who are currently giving to the institution but have the capacity to make a larger gift if so motivated.

The Philanthropy Officer will work under the direction of the Vice President for Advancement, and in close collaboration with the Advancement Manager and Advancement Assistant, to assure that ample funds are generated to enhance and support the overall mission of the Laboratory. This position requires working out of our East Boothbay campus as needed, working evenings or weekend events, and traveling to visit prospects and donors. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience closing five- to six-figure philanthropic gifts, thrive in a professional and dynamic workplace, work well both in a team environment and independently, and be dependable with a positive attitude.
