Appalachian Mountain Club seeks Maintenance Operations Manager

Tuesday, September 20, 2022

The Maintenance Operations Manager provides year-round supervision of the maintenance of AMC’s backcountry wilderness lodges in Maine. Key responsibilities include the Nordic grooming program, and maintenance of motorized equipment such as snowmobiles and piston-bully. A small team of maintenance technicians and a mechanic report to the Operations Manager to support all these functions that are critical to the success of our lodging operations.

Priorities shift and transition with the time of year. Success in the role will require the person to balance tactical day-to-day operations with strategic planning particularly regarding capital improvements. The Maintenance Operations Manager must also be able to work collaboratively: with the Regional Lodging Manager to ensure staff and guest needs at the facilities are being met, as well as with the Director of Maine Conservation and Land Management to integrate trail maintenance project work within the Maine Woods Initiative’s conservation framework.

What you’ll be doing

  • Maintain equipment and supervise the storage of hand tools and power equipment in a neat, efficient and safe manner
  • Operate heavy machinery for snow removal, trail mowing and grooming, and infrastructure projects
  • Winterize and de-winterize all water and other seasonal systems at each facility
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain facility systems including electrical (generators, inverters, PV array, battery systems), propane supply, potable water, carpentry repair, and solid waste
  • Ensure adequate supply and storage of firewood and fuels for lodges and remote cabins
  • Oversee of Maine fleet and equipment through inventory record keeping, scheduling of both routine and targeted maintenance and repairs, registering, and storage
  • Oversight of the Maine Operations & Equipment property
  • Work with the VP of Operations, the Maine Regional Lodging Manager, and the Director of Maine Conservation and Land Management to oversee capital improvement projects and to develop short and long-range plans and budgets
  • Manage relationships and financial contracts with external contractors as assigned
  • Implement energy conservation and environmentally sound practices in daily operations consistent with AMC’s Net Zero goals
  • Maintain accurate financial records and control routine expenses based on an approved, annual operating budget
