Join the National Convening Online!

We are so excited to see our friends and colleagues in Houston next month for GCIR's 2022 national convening, but we know not everyone can attend in person. For that reason, we are livestreaming five of our programs, including our plenary sessions. We hope you will join us virtually to enjoy an all-star lineup of movement leaders and experts as they delve into key issues facing immigrant and refugee communities and share cutting-edge strategies for advancing immigrant justice.

See below for details and links to join each of the sessions. If you have any questions or run into any issues, contact Angelica Laguna.

Livestream Sessions

Moving Money, Moving Power: Investing in Immigrant Leadership
May 10, 2022 | 11:00am - 12:00pm PT | 12:00 - 1:00pm MT | 1:00 - 12:00pm CT | 2:00 - 3:00pm ET

Leadership is crucial in times of crisis—even more so in the struggle for long-term structural change. Centering the leadership of directly impacted individuals and those closest to the challenges at hand is vital to building power for immigrant and refugee communities. During this plenary we will reflect on how philanthropy can move from charitable giving to strategically moving money and power to communities that have historically been under-resourced.

  • Juanita Cabrera Lopez, International Mayan League
  • Guerline Josef, Haitian Bridge Alliance
  • Dauda Sesay, Louisiana Organization for Refugees and Immigrants, Refugee Congress and African Communities Together
  • Moderated by Kalia Abiade, Pillars Fund

  • Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia, JOLT Action Texas

Dismantling Ableist Immigration Policies
May 12, 2022 | 8:15 - 9:45am PT | 9:15 - 10:45am MT | 10:15 - 11:45am CT | 11:15am - 12:45pm ET

Many U.S. immigration laws are inherently ableist and aim to prevent people with chronic illness and mental disabilities from entering the country, obtaining work authorization, or accessing public benefits to which they are entitled. The idea that the only immigrants “worthy” of coming to or staying in the U.S. are those who are healthy and wealthy flies in the face of our stated values and negatively impacts immigrants with disabilities. Explore how immigrant justice intersects with disability justice and how funders can support immigrants with disabilities.

  • Qudsiya Naqui, Down to the Struts
  • Moderated by Sandy Ho, Borealis Philanthropy
