Foundations request a number of financial documents from grantees, often with a uniform approach to risk mitigation by reviewing financials regardless of the type or size of the grant, the capacity and needs of their grantee organization, or the values of their institution. But what would it look like if, rather than prioritizing risk mitigation, foundations reversed their financial due diligence approach and goals? What if we looked at financial reviews as a means to strengthen our grantees? What if we intentionally focused our financial reviews on organizations that needed help—in order to provide that help, and practiced a trust-based approach for the majority of our grantees?

In this session, we’ll unpack an innovative approach to reviewing financials that puts grantees first in order to best align with social justice and equity values without sacrificing a reasonable level of due diligence.

Goals of the session

  • Learn how one foundation has created policies in line with this approach to FDD.
  • Discover ways to make the most of Candid’s available data to streamline FDD, including document requests of grantees.
  • Provide an opportunity for participants to reflect on the concepts and their approaches in breakout groups.

Speakers include

  • Rodney Christopher, Managing Director, Philanthropic Services, BDO FMA
  • Jennifer Pedroni, Director, Philanthropic Services, BDO FMA
  • Jonathan Goldberg, Director, Learning and Grant Operations, Surdna Foundation
