Many corporate employee engagement programs provide opportunities for employees to volunteer their time and talents – and volunteerism initiatives can prove beneficial. Recently, the 2017 Deloitte Volunteerism Survey found that “creating a culture of volunteerism in the workplace may boost morale, workplace atmosphere, and brand perception.”

How do companies successfully create these “cultures of volunteerism”? In this event designed for corporate giving professionals, we’ll share ideas and resources for developing, promoting, managing, and evaluating employee volunteer programs. Steve Alpren will kick off the conversation by providing an overview of Unum’s volunteerism initiatives.  We’ll then launch into a peer conversation, exploring questions such as the following:

  • What are companies’ goals for their volunteer programs, and how is success defined and measured?
  • How do volunteer programs fit into, and align with, broader CSR (corporate social responsibility) plans and initiatives?
  • How do companies promote volunteerism and get people to participate?
  • What kinds of tracking systems do organizations use, and how do they incentivize employees to accurately track volunteer hours?
  • What kinds of challenges might companies experience in their efforts to promote volunteerism, and how might those challenges be overcome?

Session Resources

At this gathering, we shared parts of a presentation about employee engagement and employee volunteerism programs that was created in partnership between the United Philanthropy Forum and the TCC Group. These employee volunteerism resources are available to Maine Philanthropy Center members.
