Event Description

The Environmental Funders Network (EFN) is hosting a brown-bag lunch at The Nature Conservancy in Brunswick to continue discussion about its October 2018 Funders Tour to the Katahdin region. All funders are welcome to join us in learning about the progress of the Katahdin Collaborative and the 18-month community-led process that gathered input from residents, businesses, organizations and collaborators to create an action plan for the future of the Katahdin region.

Community leaders and other collaborators will present an overview of the Katahdin Gazetteer: A Roadmap to the Future and highlights of the work ahead. Learn more about all that has been happening since last autumn's tour, glean some insight into the region’s vision, action steps and priority goals, and discuss opportunities as the region moves forward.

Background Refresher - About The Katahdin Collaborative

The Katahdin Collaborative (https://katahdincollaborative.org) is a regional network among the eight communities encircling Katahdin. It focuses on creating a positive environment to facilitate communication, leverage resources, and foster collaboration among the many volunteer groups, businesses, non-profit institutions and municipalities that are working toward the revitalization of the Katahdin Region. Completion of the Gazetteer now requires a cohesive approach to building capacity to implement community and economic development goals.

For the past 18 months, the Katahdin Collaborative worked with community members from eight towns in the region, a nine-person steering committee, and Adam Burk + Co. to gather input from community members, businesses, organizations and collaborators to create a vision and action plan called the Katahdin Gazetteer: A Roadmap to the Future. The Gazetteer highlights six “big ideas” for focused action:

  1. Fostering vibrant villages
  2. Making the Katahdin Region the premier four-season outdoor destination in New England
  3. Being a place that supports and attracts people of all ages
  4. Cultivating local jobs and a new regional economy
  5. Growing the next wave of forest product manufacturing, and
  6. Future-proofing the region.

During the Gazetteer release event, a community member from Island Falls said: “We used to dream alone, and now we can dream together.” The Katahdin Collaborative is proud to be part of that dreaming – and you are invited to dream along with us and help us turn these dreams into reality.
