What is Philanthropy?

Philanthropy comes from the Greek word, meaning “love for mankind.”  Philanthropy is the concept of voluntary giving by an individual or group to promote the common good. The word "philanthropy" also includes grants of money given by foundations to nonprofit organizations and contributions of an individual, corporations or group to other organizations that in turn work for the causes of poverty or social problems, improving the quality of life for all citizens.  This type of giving is often referred to as organized philanthropy or grantmaking.
